Basingstoke Bluefins Disability Swimming -

Sharks Squad

Disability swimming is catered for by our specialist ‘Sharks’ squad, founded in 2005 to provide children and young adults between 8-18 years the opportunity to swim. We have a small but friendly team with committed swimming teachers and several water helpers to assist our lead coach, which allows us to keep group sizes to a minimum.

As a team, we enter several galas each year where swimmers enjoy the competition but also the social element and experience. We encourage swimmers to enter galas and we have had a success with this over the years achieving a good record of bronze/silver and gold awards. In 2017 we had 6 of our swimmers representing the South of England at the Special Olympics in Sheffield. Unfortunately, the 2021 competition has been cancelled where a number of our swimmers were due to compete.

We also run an annual Specialist School gala which sees approximately 45 swimmers from Basingstoke’s specialist schools participate. We have strong links with 4 local schools:

  • Dove House

  • Saxonwood

  • Limington House

  • Maple Ridge

Our main feeder school is Dove House where we are very grateful to staff there for supporting and encouraging their students to swim as well as helping to administer our annual events.

Sharks are also regular attendees to the annual Lions club Swimathon and usually collect around £800 for Lions charities. We are extremely grateful to the Lions who have now donated a trophy to Sharks for the most improved swimmer.

We have a group of 4 young and very committed swimming teachers to assist the coach and also several young helpers. This enables us to keep a smaller session size of 4 to 5.
